Hokkaido Highway Blues

Thursday, July 24, 2025

One of my top priorities for this summer was to spend a lot of time sitting on my front porch. Yes, I know--very ambitious.

Lately I've been reading Will Ferguson's Hokkaido Highway Blues, a travelogue recounting Ferguson's hitchhiking travels across Japan. I enjoyed it immensely.

In some ways, Hokkaido Highway Blues reminded me of my brother's book about his hitchhiking exploits in China and Tibet in the mid-1980s, No Turning Back. Both books shift nicely between describing individual travel stories and discussing the countries in which they travel. Which, I guess, is something that most travel books do, although these two do it particularly well.

Ferguson's book is quite funny in spots--I laughed out loud probably 15-20 times while reading it. I was also impressed by his use of metaphor, as he's got some good ones. It turns out Ferguson has published a number of books, including fiction. All of this from someone who started out teaching English as a second language abroad.

Naturally, I find his story rather inspiring, and I'll keep an eye out for his other books when visiting my favorite bookstore, Elk River in Livingston.

All in all, Hokkaido Highway Blues constituted a fine addition to my summer patio reading list. It sure made me want to visit Japan again.

But now I've got to find something new to read.
