It was a festive 4th of July in Belgrade. Belgrade has no municipal firework show, so instead people make their own.

There was a good turnout for "Cars on Broadway" |
I remember my first 4th here in 2021. I'd gone to a barbecue at the home of some Belgrade friends. While biking home in the early evening I passed one driveway after another that was filled with a dozen or more people. They were milling about, eating burgers and watermelon, and waiting for the darkness to come and the show to begin. Every other household, it seemed, was stocked with enough firepower to fend off North Korean forces for a period of several days.
It's interesting to watch a fireworks show from within. In Belgrade and other small towns in Montana, you really get the 360 degree surround-sound experience. The most professional-looking fireworks were those of my neighbor to the east, while neighbors on the northeast and northwest sides of my house did their best to compete. Meanwhile, there is a lot of other smaller-scale madness and mayhem taking place--cracking, popping, fizzing and blasting on all sides. A fully submersive experience.
It's fun, even if at times it seems like incendiary devices were whizzing past my ear as I walked through the neighborhood to see who's doing what.

On Sunday, Belgrade hosted "Cars on Broadway," a car show that takes place on the corner of Broadway and Main streets, the four-way stop that marks the center of the city's downtown. I live just down the street from there, so I get to see the old cars puttering up Broadway on their way up to the display area.
My Subaru is 25 years old, so it won't be long before I'll be joining them.
